Community Soil Health

Ready to support thriving ecosystems in your community? Attendees of all experience levels are invited to join us for hands-on workshops to discover the connections between composting, soil science, and community health! 

Community Soil Lab

Join our soil scientists for a hands-on soil health workshop! Participants will study soil and compost through exciting lab testing and composting activities.

  • Lab tests include: soil texture, pH, nutrient levels (NPK), microbial levels, and fungi:bacteria (F:B) ratios

  • Composting activities include: turning piles, temperature and moisture observations, and sifting

  • You’re welcome to bring ONE soil or compost sample with you for testing during our session (optional - see details upon registration)

When: Every second Saturday of the month from 10 AM - 12 PM

Where: Cottonwood Urban Farm in Panorama City


You’re welcome to bring up to three soil or compost samples with you for study during our session (optional - see details upon registration).

When & Where: Every third Friday of the month at the Audubon Center at Debs Park

  • Public Session: 1-2:30pm

  • Private Sessions: available for individuals or groups of up to 12 upon request - inquire at learn@lacompost.org

Scope Out Your Soil

Discover the abundant life that exists in our soils as we search for organisms under the microscope! During these workshops, our observations will guide attendees in understanding who lives in our soils and how we can support these important microbes in creating healthy food and soil systems.

Compost 101 Workshops

Are you new to the magically messy world of composting? We’re here to help! Through an introductory workshop, we’ll guide you through the basics of composting so that you feel equipped to compost in Los Angeles and join our movement toward healthier soils and healthier people.

When & Where: At the moment, our team is available to collaborate on hosting workshop events. You provide the space and the audience, and we’ll bring our engaging educational materials. Workshops typically last 1-1.5 hours.
