  • The Education Program Manager will report to the Executive Director to develop new educational offerings and support general compost education across multiple LA Compost program areas.

    The Education Manager at LA Compost will spearhead the launch of the Youth Education program, organizing field trips and mobile learning experiences for schools. Responsibilities include developing engaging compost and soil health curricula, coordinating logistics for educational visits, and collaborating with outreach and operations teams. Additionally, the role involves managing Community Soil Health events, overseeing part-time staff, and enhancing existing educational resources. The manager will also contribute to general compost workshop development, collaborate with international networks, and maintain educational program systems. Data collection and reporting for grant and donor purposes are integral to the role.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Youth Education:

    Spearhead the official launch of LA Compost's Youth Education program by facilitating on-site field trips to Compost Hubs and mobile learning hub visits to school campuses via the Magic Soil Bus.

    Conduct school outreach, informational sessions, and maintain a comprehensive database of education partners for collaborative learning opportunities.

    Innovate and develop a dynamic compost and soil health curriculum tailored for pre-K to high school students, leveraging LA Compost's library resources.

    Coordinate logistics for the Magic Soil Bus, including registration, scheduling, and pre/post visit communications with educators and other stakeholders.

    Implement LA Compost's curriculum through engaging Magic Soil Bus visits to diverse sites such as school campuses, community events, and partner locations.

    Collaborate closely with the Senior Outreach and Communications Manager and Community Engagement Manager to promote Youth Education offerings effectively.

    Partner with the Senior Operations Manager to oversee procurement and budget management for all educational materials.

    Coordinate personnel scheduling and preparation for on-campus Magic Soil Bus visits and Compost Hub-based field trips.

    Deliver high-quality programming and interactive activities to school partners, ensuring professional standards are maintained.

    Collect and analyze program data for grant applications, donor reports, and annual reporting requirements, including evaluations, registration numbers, anecdotes, and photographs.

    Community Soil Health:

    Maintain a calendar of Community Soil Health events in collaboration with the program team.

    Supervise two part-time personnel, including the Soil & Compost Specialist and the Community Soil Lab Facilitator.

    Enhance existing Community Soil Health educational curriculum and resources.

    Collect and analyze program data for grant applications, donor reports, and annual reporting requirements.

    General Compost Workshop & Resources:

    Collaborate with the Community Hubs Programs Manager to develop and implement innovative enhancements to LA Compost's educational offerings across its network of compost hubs.

    Engage with compost networks to leverage resources and existing curriculum offerings, enriching LAC programs.

    Work closely with the program area leads to identify and schedule unique educational offerings and enrichment programs.

    Provide input to the Senior Communications Manager on educational online content and program promotion.

    Manage and maintain all Educational Program internal systems, resources, and materials.

    Lead regular Education Team meetings and attend Admin Team meetings as required.

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

    Any combination of formal education, paid work experience, and unpaid/volunteer experience will be considered to meet the following:

    A minimum education level is a Bachelor's degree in a related field or at least three years of equivalent experience working with children and adults in an educational or outdoor setting.

    Background in educational program design and assessment, curriculum development, and compost or soil health.

    Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective engagement with program attendees, volunteers, visitors, board members, and staff.

    Experience leading groups, volunteers, and teaching students.

    Ability to operate various types of equipment safely and efficiently, or willingness to learn.

    Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for local and surrounding community travel.

    Preferred bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English.

    Proficiency with Google Workspace and Notion project management platforms.

    Background check required.

    Ability or willingness to learn to drive a Class C 25 ft van.

    Passionate and optimistic individual with a strong interest in racial and environmental justice, education, and community building.

    Proficient in developing systems and managing projects in a remote work environment, demonstrating self-starting abilities.

    Possesses sound judgment, leadership, and decision-making skills, with a solutions-oriented mindset.

    Strong time management skills, demonstrating self-motivation, accuracy, and attention to detail.

    Willingness to learn from mistakes, accept constructive feedback, and provide feedback to others.

    Ability to work easily and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering relationships with diplomacy and sensitivity to complex organizational dynamics.

    Comfortable working outdoors in various terrain and weather conditions, with the ability to transport up to 25 lbs. with or without accommodation.

    Availability to work occasional weekends or evenings.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS

    Compensation for this role will be a $60,000-$75,000 yearly salary commensurate with experience.

    Benefits include paid time off (PTO), 12 federal holidays (selected by LA Compost Staff), Health and Dental insurance coverage, cell phone stipend, and access to a 401k retirement savings plan with an employer match option.

    HYBRID-REMOTE WORK SCHEDULE

    This is a full-time, hybrid-remote position. This staff member will be expected to work in the office one day per week and will have the flexibility to work remotely during the rest of the week. In addition, this staff member will be required to support in-person outreach initiatives and events, as needed.
